Tony Gusic started paddling in the late 70's and brought Rick and Robb into the sport as teens in the early 80's. Rick and Robb then worked as river guides throughout their younger years.

In the early 90's Rick was one of the original founders, and organizers of this race until his passing in 2019, The 2020 Down River Race, although canceled due to the pandemic, was named the Rick Gusic Cheat River Massacre-ence in celebration of the memory of Rick.
